Top Three Dog Parks in New York City

Big cities do not seem to appear very welcoming to the “furry side” of everyday life. But what some with dogs have come to understand, is the bigger the city, the wider their arms are open to your pooch. Consequently, the “Big Apple” has so many dog parks, that a New York Times best-seller, Nadia Zonis, published a book about it entitled “Exploring New York With Your Dog.” New York City is home to many parks and most, if not all, of them welcome your dog. Hearing from one who has researched and visited most of the parks, it helps to know what these ‘travelers’ rank as the top 3 places to visit with your dog in New York.

Central Park could be the biggest park to all walking creatures, with 843 acres of friendly nature. It not only welcomes dogs but encourages dog owners to bring their pets when they visit. Though there are no fenced areas for your dog to run, the park does have specific dog-friendly areas, 23 to be exact, where dog owners gather for playtime. Between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and again between 9:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. you will be allowed to let your dog run off-leash in most areas, and any areas where dogs are forbidden at all times are well marked with signs.

Secondly, in her published piece “Exploring New York With Your Dog,” Ms. Nadia Zonis, of the New York Times October 2nd 2009 issue, recommends the Socrates Sculpture Park. According to Ms. Zonis, “…there is something very New York about viewing art with your dog at your side.” The park is open every day all year and in the Autumn it even hosts a Halloween costume contest for dogs.

Perhaps the best thing about this park is that its home of many local artists to showcase their statues and sculpture pieces. Though your dog has to be leashed, its a great way for you to enjoy an artistic atmosphere outside while your dog enjoys the 4.5 acre adventure and fresh air.

Another high-ranked dog park called Manhattan’s Riverside Park, includes four miles bordering the beautiful Hudson River. Riverside Park has four designated dog runs where your pet will be able to enjoy romping off-leash. These runs are located at 71st, 72nd, 87th, and 105th streets. The park is completely fenced in and well managed so that you and your dog may have hours of safe, enjoyable play time. As usual, there are some areas where dogs are prohibited and some areas where your dog is welcomed on a leash, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the river-view and local bikers. You’ll find a lot of pet-owners at this venue because there are two very popular cafes open to the public and the furried family members. After a good game of Frisbee or a long run along the river, you will surely enjoy stopping in for a refreshing drink or a bite to eat at the Hudson Beach Cafe` on 105th street, or maybe you would prefer the Boat Basin Cafe` on 79th Street where the New York Post was quoted as saying, “they grill to perfection.”

However you choose to spend your day with your dog, don’t forget that New York has many locations that are pet-friendly. Spending time with your pet can have therapeutic affects on you and provide security for your dog.
